What is Mental Health?
Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively
and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his own community (World Health Organization, 2007).
What is Mental Illness?
Mental illness refers to various mental disorders and health conditions defined by alterations in thinking, mood, or behaviour (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning (Canadian Mental Health Association.)
Why is Mental Health Important to Students?
Mental health problems and illnesses are clinically significant patterns of behavior or emotions that are associated with some level of distress, suffering, or impairment in one or more areas such as school, work, social and family interactions, or the ability to live independently (Canadian Psychiatric Association, 2004).
